PE Expo 2017 a Great Success!

St Mary’s were represented for the first time last Wednesday 8th March at the annual PE Expo which took place in Trinity Comprehensive. Schools from all over the country entered projects focusing on different aspects of PE, sport and exercise. The Expo was attended by students, teachers, outside organisations and representatives from third level and inspectors from both Ireland and the UK. Our entry was in the ‘Power of Sport’ section. It made a big impact and seemed to be a talking point on the day.

TY students Leah Farrell, Caitlin Mangan, Nadine Spencer, Nicola O’Reilly and Louise Delaney made a very powerful video during their multimedia module. This video captured the key message that all sports can be played by both males and females. The aim of this project was to uncover whether gender stereotyping occurs with regard to sport and to see if this video could challenge this view. The video and two separate questionnaires (one before watching and one after) were used in this project. On the day the video received much attention from judges, peers and also outside organisations.

Caitlin and Nadine who represented the group on the day were a credit to the school by the manner which they presented their project and answered questions. Organisations such as the Irish Heart Foundation and the PEAI asked for permission to use the video in the future. It was an extremely enjoyable day and we are already looking ahead to next year’s entries. Well done girls!
