2nd year basketball fixture against Our Lady’s Drogheda 31st Jan 2017
Tuesday morning brought both 2nd year basketball teams a trip to Drogeda. Basketball’s season end is nearly here and with lots still to play for, both teams were nervous. We kicked off with the Premier team. Drogheda immediately took the lead with 2 quick baskets. An injury for Aoife Grace, and a quick substitution wasn’t the start we hoped for. Rosie Larkin’s beautiful 3 pointer was our first score, quickly followed by a successful free throw from captain Sarah Hanlon. The first quarter ended with both teams level. The second quarter proved tough and our defence worked hard but Drogheda was quick to get baskets and comfortably won the quarter. Half time and changes to the sections helped us reduce Our Lady’s lead and pull ahead with great scores from Mai Perkins, Rosie Larkin and Kate Meaney. Our team fouls and personal fouls led to changes of players and this gave Drogheda the ability to pull back level. Luck wasn’t on our side today and in the last 2 minutes Our Lady’s was awarded free throws which they converted for the win.
Final score: St Marys 20 – Our Ladys 23
This was our first loss of the season with our final game next Monday 6th Feb against Mt Sackville. Fingers crossed!!!
Division 2 were next to play. Sama Khalil got St Mary’s first score. This was quickly followed by 3 baskets from captain Aoife Sykes. The end of the first quarter saw St Mary’s leading 8-2. The 2nd quarter saw St Mary’s hold their lead but Our Lady’s also got some more scores. The 3rd and 4th quarters were similar with St Mary’s getting more confident. The team showed great team work skills and really worked hard to dominate and control the game.

Today concludes the division 2 games. We have won all our games, so are now looking forward to the next phase- quarter finals!! Well done everyone – We’re very proud of you!!
